Mount Vernon Municipal Court Personnel
The court records are maintained by the office of the Clerk of Court. The Clerk of Court is also responsible for collecting fines and court costs. The prosecution of cases in this court is the responsibility of the Mount Vernon Law Director and is carried out by assistant prosecutors. There is one judge in this court, and the judge also appoints magistrates to hear some cases.

What Happens At Court Appearances
For some cases, you might not have to appear in court at all. You can simply pay the fine (which admits guilt). Whether you need to appear in court depends on the type and seriousness of your offense, and the severity of the offense. You should check your ticket or complaint to see if you need to appear, and you can also find out by calling the Clerk of Court office.

If you are charged with an offense that requires a court appearance, or if you choose to appear for a payable ticket, your first appearance in court is your arraignment. At the arraignment, you will plead guilty, no contest, or not guilty. If you plead guilty, the judge will impose the sentence, and your case will be done. If you plead not guilty, the case will be set for a pretrial hearing. At this hearing, you or your attorney can negotiate with the prosecution to reach an agreement. If there are legal issues that the judge needs to address, your attorney will file motions, and the judge will hold a motion hearing. If you can’t agree on a plea bargain with the prosecutor, your case will go to trial, and a jury or judge will decide if you are guilty. If you are found guilty, you will proceed to a sentencing for the judge to announce the punishment.
